DeWine proposes missile defense site

Gov. Mike DeWine wants Camp Garfield, located in Trumbull and Portage counties, to become the nation’s third Continental United States Interceptor Site (CIS).

The country has 44 ground-based interceptor missiles at two sites in Alaska and California. The interceptors do not explode, but would stop missiles headed toward the U.S. by crashing into them.

If brought to Ohio, the site could have an economic impact of $3-4 billion with approximately 2,000 construction jobs and significant direct and indirect jobs. DeWine sent a letter to acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan requesting the site to be considered.
