The comedian George Carlin had a bit called “The Hippy Dippy Weatherman.” In it he mentions the temperature at the airport but adds, “I don’t know anybody who lives at the airport.”
Local TV weather forecasters often follow suit, forgetting Lake Erie weather for boaters. That’s where a localized forecast from a lake buoy comes in handy.
During the boating season, there will be up to 20 buoys in Lake Erie to text for weather information. They’ll return wind speed, water temperature, air temperature and wave height. This forecasting was so popular in 2018, a second phone number was added.
