What started as a wacky way to predict the upcoming winter has turned into a full-blown festival, now in its 47th year. The Woollybear Festival in Vermillion takes place on Sunday, Oct. 6, and 47 years later, it is still going strong.

The event is hosted by Cleveland TV Meteorologist Dick Goddard, who pitched his co-workers about his idea for a celebration built around using the woolly bear caterpillar to forecast what kind of winter is ahead.

The affair has become the largest one-day festival in the state of Ohio. It includes a parade, food and a host of activities.
