Phoebe Ann Moses is known better by the stage name she took on as an award-winning markswoman. Known as Annie to her family, this sharpshooter learned that she had a skill with a rifle while working to support her family.
With her father’s gun, she took up hunting to collect game for her second stepfather’s family’s grocery store in Greenville, Ohio. She was then invited to her first shooting contest, which she won with ease.
This contest was just the start of a long career for Annie, who went on to take the surname “Oakley” for a nearby Ohio town.
