Littering takes its toll statewide

We at The Ohio 100 think our state is one of the most beautiful. But did you know that ODOT spent almost $4 million last year picking up 396,000 bags of trash? That’s just from interstates and U.S. routes outside of municipalities.

It took employees, inmates and Adopt-A-Highway volunteers over 157,000 hours, or 19,723 full work days, to collect garbage. Littering is illegal in Ohio, but the rule is not strictly enforced. In the past five years, the Ohio State Highway Patrol issued 818 tickets for littering; for speeding, officers issued 1.9 million.
