Akron is helping businesses in local neighborhoods to receive loans and grants for civic improvement. Called the Great Streets Initiative, the program aims to bring business and vibrancy back to small-business districts or “mini downtowns” in 10 neighborhoods.
According to Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan, the neighborhoods include West Hill, North Hill, Copley Road East, Maple Valley, Middlebury, Ellet, Firestone Park, Wallhaven, Kenmore and Goodyear Heights. Dollars are earmarked for building facade upgrades and street enhancements.
Great Streets began to invest in a more vibrant, walkable Main Street portion of downtown Akron and has since grown to the outer neighborhoods.
