A trio of Buckeye ballplayers share a surname, deep Ohio roots and a passion for America’s pastime.

Leander Franklin “Big Dan” Abbott, born in Portage on March 16, 1862, took to the pitcher’s mound for the Toledo Maumees in 1890 with a record of 0-2.

Harry Frederick “Fred” Abbott, born in Versailles on October 22,1864, played behind home plate for three seasons with the Cleveland Naps and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Kurt Abbott, born in Zanesville on June 2, 1969, spent the majority of his career with the Florida Marlins – including the 1997 season in which they were World Series champs.
